World’s Busiest Container Ports in 2024 Highlight Asia’s Dominance in Global Trade

The Port of Shanghai in China has retained its position as the world’s busiest seaport for over a decade, processing more than 51.5 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) in 2024. The port continues to serve as a critical hub in global maritime trade, driven by China’s vast manufacturing and export capacity.

The ranking underscores Asia’s overwhelming dominance in global container shipping, with Chinese ports occupying five of the top six positions worldwide.

Top 10 Busiest Container Ports (2024)

Based on TEU throughput, the world’s leading container ports are:

  • Port of Shanghai, China — ~51.5 million TEUs
  • Port of Singapore, Singapore — ~41.1 million TEUs
  • Ningbo-Zhoushan, China — ~39.3 million TEUs
  • Shenzhen, China — ~33.4 million TEUs
  • Qingdao, China — ~30.9 million TEUs
  • Guangzhou, China — ~26.1 million TEUs
  • Busan, South Korea — ~24.4 million TEUs
  • Tianjin, China — ~23.3 million TEUs
  • Jebel Ali, United Arab Emirates — ~15.5 million TEUs
  • Port Klang, Malaysia — ~14.6 million TEUs

Asia’s Continued Dominance in Global Shipping

The 2024 data confirms that Asia remains the epicenter of global container logistics, with roughly 75% of the world’s busiest ports located in the region. China’s dominance is particularly pronounced, reflecting its role as the world’s largest manufacturing and export economy.

Ports such as Shanghai and Ningbo-Zhoushan benefit from advanced automation, deep-water capacity, and integration with extensive industrial zones, enabling high-volume and high-efficiency cargo handling.

Shanghai’s Global Leadership

The Port of Shanghai stands out not only for its scale but also for its technological advancement. It operates one of the world’s most automated container terminals and consistently processes over 50 million TEUs annually, reinforcing its status as a critical node in global supply chains.

Other Major Global Trade Hubs

While Asia leads the rankings, key ports outside the region continue to play important roles in international trade, including:

  • Port of Rotterdam, Netherlands
  • Port of Antwerp-Bruges, Belgium
  • Port of Los Angeles, United States

These hubs serve as vital gateways for transatlantic and transpacific trade flows, connecting global manufacturing centers with consumer markets.

Global Trade Implications

The concentration of top-performing ports in Asia highlights the ongoing shift of global trade gravity toward the region. Strong industrial bases, efficient logistics infrastructure, and expanding intra-Asian trade continue to reinforce this dominance.

As global supply chains evolve, investments in port automation, digital logistics systems, and shipping infrastructure are expected to further shape competitiveness among major maritime hubs worldwide.
