Made in Nigeria Project Office, Abuja: From National Vision to a Strategic Platform for Industrial Transformation
On February 1, 2017, the Federal Executive Council (FEC), during its meeting at the State House in Abuja, approved the Campaign to Sensitize Nigerians to Patronize Made in Nigeria Products. This landmark decision represented a significant step in the Federal Government's drive to stimulate local manufacturing, strengthen indigenous industries, reduce dependence on imports, create employment opportunities, and build a more self-reliant economy.
While the 2017 FEC approval gave the initiative official national policy backing, the vision behind the Made in Nigeria Initiative dates back much earlier. Its foundation was laid in 2006 during the Nigeria–Singapore Economic Forum, where the concept of developing globally competitive Nigerian brands and promoting local production emerged as a strategic framework for accelerating Nigeria's industrial and economic transformation.
The initiative was subsequently developed and institutionalized under the leadership of Ambassador Chike Alex Anigbo (MNI), who championed the vision of positioning Nigerian products and services for both domestic acceptance and international competitiveness. Following years of advocacy and stakeholder engagement, the initiative received formal approval from the Federal Executive Council in 2017.
In its early implementation, the Made in Nigeria Initiative operated as a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) in collaboration with Trade Nigeria, creating a platform that brought together government institutions, private sector operators, manufacturers, investors, entrepreneurs, and development partners to promote Nigerian-made goods and services while encouraging industrial investment.
Today, the initiative has evolved into a broader national economic development platform under the leadership of Hon. George Buchi Nwabueze, National Coordinator and Executive Director of the National Brands Development and Made in Nigeria Project Office, operating under the Economic Affairs Office of the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF).
Building on its original mandate, the Project Office has expanded its activities to include national product fairs, trade expos, investment forums, export promotion programmes, branding initiatives, youth entrepreneurship development, innovation support, and strategic partnerships with state governments and private sector stakeholders. The office is also driving efforts to strengthen Nigeria's national brands while encouraging greater patronage of locally manufactured products.
The Made in Nigeria Initiative remains committed to several strategic objectives that are central to Nigeria's economic future:
Promoting indigenous manufacturing and local value addition.
Strengthening Nigerian brands and expanding local content across industries.
Supporting Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) as engines of economic growth.
Expanding export opportunities for Nigerian products in regional and global markets.
Attracting domestic and foreign investment into productive sectors.
Driving sustainable industrialization and economic diversification.
As Nigeria seeks to build a resilient and competitive economy, initiatives such as Made in Nigeria have become increasingly important. Industrial development is no longer simply about increasing production; it is about creating value, developing globally recognized brands, fostering innovation, generating employment, and positioning Nigeria as a leading manufacturing and export hub in Africa.
The journey from its conception in 2006 to Federal Executive Council approval in 2017, and its continued expansion today, reflects a long-term national commitment to economic transformation through production rather than consumption.
More than a government campaign, Made in Nigeria has become a national movement, one that encourages every Nigerian to support locally produced goods, empowers businesses to compete globally, and strengthens the country's industrial foundation for future generations.
As the initiative continues to evolve, it represents a shared vision of a Nigeria where local industries thrive, national brands gain international recognition, and economic prosperity is built on the strength of homegrown enterprise, innovation, and productivity.
