PREAMBLE
The Nigeria–Hong Kong Business Summit 2025 and the Made in Nigeria Product Fair, Expo, Exhibition and Economic Forum were strategic initiatives designed to promote economic cooperation, trade expansion, and investment flows between Nigeria and Hong Kong.
The Summit served as a high-level platform for partnership, progress, and prosperity, reflecting the shared vision of Nigeria and the People’s Republic of China for sustainable growth driven by innovation, industrial production, and inclusive development.
This engagement took place at a pivotal moment in Nigeria’s national journey. Under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, the Federal Government has articulated a clear and ambitious development pathway through the Renewed Hope Agenda and the Nigeria First Project, aimed at repositioning Nigeria as Africa’s industrial and investment hub.
The Summit theme, “Industrialize Nigeria,” directly aligns with this national aspiration—transitioning Nigeria from a consumption-driven economy to a production and export-led economy, from resource dependency to value creation, and from potential to measurable performance.
Hosted in Hong Kong, the Summit provided a global stage to showcase Nigeria’s creativity, resilience, and entrepreneurial capacity. Participants explored opportunities in investment, trade partnerships, cultural diplomacy, education, technology transfer, and innovation, while Nigerian enterprises exhibited premium products and services to Asian and global markets.

Additionally, global promotion strengthens Nigeria’s national brand, increases product visibility, and enhances diplomatic and trade relations with partner countries.
3.2 Challenges
-
Product Standards: Nigerian products must consistently meet international quality standards through effective quality control mechanisms.
-
Infrastructure: Improvements in transportation and logistics infrastructure are required to support global trade competitiveness.

4.1.1 Profile of Shanghai Electric
Shanghai Electric is one of China’s largest comprehensive equipment manufacturers, with industry leadership spanning energy equipment, industrial equipment, and advanced services. The company provides integrated clean energy solutions globally.
Through its Power Generation Group, Shanghai Electric specializes in power generation equipment manufacturing, plant construction, engineering, and services, with an annual output capacity of 36 million kW. Its product portfolio includes 50MW–1240MW thermal power units, nuclear power generation equipment, gas turbines, ultra-supercritical units, and advanced environmental protection systems.
Shanghai Electric operates in over 30 countries, has completed more than 90 global projects, and boasts an installed capacity exceeding 92 million kW. In 2017, it ranked 141st among ENR’s Top 250 International Contractors.
The company also provides full life-cycle plant services, including energy efficiency upgrades, environmental retrofitting, smart power plants, and emerging solutions such as zero liquid discharge and energy storage. It has further expanded into solar power, desalination, tidal energy, superconducting motors, and ocean current power generation.

RECOMMENDATIONS AND LESSONS LEARNT
The Made in Nigeria Project Office requires sustained moral, financial, and institutional support to consolidate gains and build on the success of the Hong Kong engagements.
The Summit experienced setbacks due to the withdrawal of some subscribers following uncomplimentary remarks by certain staff of PEAO–OSGF. As a key lesson, officials unfamiliar with the Project’s objectives should refrain from negative commentary that undermines national initiatives.
CONCLUSION
Promoting Nigerian-made products and services globally offers substantial economic, social, and competitive benefits. Through sustained engagement, strategic partnerships, and institutional support, Nigeria can accelerate industrialization, expand exports, and strengthen its position in the global marketplace.
